Three things, and they move the number considerably more than negotiating over the price ever will. All three are free and none takes long.
Take out what is being kept first
Anything going to family should be gone, or at minimum clearly labeled, before anybody quotes the job. Sorting on the day with a crew standing there is the most expensive way to sort anything. It also makes the quote much more accurate.
Find the paperwork before the furniture moves
Deeds, titles, insurance documents, savings bonds and photographs. These turn up inside dressers, tucked into books and taped to the back of drawers, and we find them regularly. Once a room is on a truck that search is effectively over, so do it first.
Decide about the genuinely valuable items separately

Is an estate cleanout cheaper than a dumpster in Concord?
Sometimes, and it depends almost entirely on who is going to do the carrying. That is the variable nobody puts on an invoice.
A dumpster is cheap right up until you count the labor. The city collects nothing at the curb that will not fit in a trash bag, and a forty year household was never going to leave in bags.
What happens to the contents after an estate cleanout?
